Smash Mouth于1994年在圣何塞由主唱Steve Harwell组建，这是一支曲风格外新颖的乐队，最初他们的音乐与Presidents of the United States of American极为相似，但自从受新浪潮及车库风格的影响后，乐队改变了音乐风格，在原有的基础上配以朋克/打击的节奏，形成后一直保持至今。
乐队的主唱Steve Harwell本来是另一支乐队F.O.S的成员，随着乐队解散以后，他回去找到他的老朋友，鼓手Kevin Coleman，同时Harwell的经纪人也为他介绍了当地Lackadaddy乐队的吉他手Greg Camp和贝司手Paul De Lisle加入。这个4人团体很快录制了两张小样，放在当地的一家电台里播放，随后他们得到了参加夏日巡演的机会，并与No Doubrt和Beck等这样的大牌乐队同台献艺。回来之后，乐队决定录张专辑，非常幸运的是，他们刚刚录制完<Fush Yu Mang>就得到了与Interscope唱片公司的一纸合约，并以早在1997年就已经录制完成的<Walkin' on the Sun>作为单曲发行，虽然这支单曲是深受50年代曲风影响的作品，但好东西并不会因为年代的久远而丧失魅力，<Walkin' on the Sun>一举登上了流行摇滚界的首位，同时也推动了<Fush Yu Mang>进入排行榜的前40。接着在1999年发行了<Astro Lounge>，其中的单曲<All Star>更是获得了惊人的好成绩，同年发行的另一首单曲<East Bay Sessions>也同样获得了骄人的战绩。虽然后来Smash Mouth再没有带来同等重量级的好作品，但其后分别在2001年发行的<Smash Mouth>以及2003年的<Get the Picture?>均为佳品，仍不失让他们成为歌迷心目中闪耀的明星。
